Satyagraha Movie Review

Movie- Satyagraha
Time-9.00 am
Capacity- 50%

Satyagraha starring Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgn, Arjun Rampal,Kareena Kapoor Khan, Manoj Bajpai,Amrita Arora releases today all over India. The movie was supposed to release on 15th August but was later on postponed to 30th March to get a clean run with decent screens. There is a lot of expectation from the movie since it marks the return of Amitabh Bachchan after very long. But will the movie be able to fulfill the expectations?? Find it out here.

Satyagraha is being directed by Prakash Jha who has directed many movies in this genre. The movie is being well directed by him but surely this isn't his best work. The movie starts off well and Prakash Jha develops the characters very well. He makes us know the nature of all character in the start of the movie so that there is no confusion about the actions of character in the end. Full marks to him on the way he has established all characters by showing their morals and aim. Prakash Jha had a clear intention to make a movie having a hard hitting message regarding the current system and he has done it very well. The message which he wants to give the audience reaches well and shall connect with all. But in the process of delivering the message he has added many scenes which are not needed specially in the 2nd half. Trying to make the movie a bit commercial he has added Ajay Devgn and Kareena Kapoor's love story which does nothing but increases the length of the movie.
The movie has got many positives in it but there are some negatives too. As the promos suggested the movie lacks the entertainment value and this was not expected too since a movie on serious subject like this cannot have entertainment. But the main negative is there are couple of points which are shown in the 1st half go untouched in the 2nd half. This creates a doubt in the mind of the movie watching audience. The director has spent too long on one of the emotional scene in the 1st half. The camera just focuses on Amitabh and Ajay crying for very long which again increases the length. There are a lot of unwanted scenes in 2nd half which hampers the pace. One more negative part of the movie is Arjun Rampal is being wrongly casted in the movie. His expressions are wooden. But more than negative points there are positive points in the movie.

The biggest factor which goes with the movie is performance by the main cast. Amitabh Bachchan is BRILLIANT. He will surely make you cry in the climax. Watch out for the scene right after Raghpati Raghav song. He is too good in that. He is very good through out the movie. Ajay Devgn goes neck to neck with Amitabh Bachchan. It is difficult to decide who did a better job. Ajay Devgn should be proud of what he has done in the movie. He is very good in the climax. Dont miss his speech in the climax. It shall touch your heart. Kareena Kapoor Khan looks so beautiful throughout the movie. Her cloths in the movie perfectly suit her. She looks amazing in the movie. She portrays the role of Journalist very well. She is one of the finest actress in India. Manoj Bajpai is very good in the negative role but could have done better. He could not surpass what he has done in Rajneeti. Arjun Rampal disappoints. The supporting cast of the movie is good. The placement of songs like Raghu Pati Raghav and Janta rocks is very good where as rest are unnecessary. The basic plot of the movie revolves around current situation of the country which makes the movie worth a watch. Prakash Jha expands the script very well. It fun to see something happening after sometime. The boring scenes of the movies are followed by some brilliant scenes.

Overall, Satyagraha does not surpass Prakash Jha's past superhits Rajneeti and Gangajaal but this attempt of him to make people aware of whats happening around deserves a watch. There are many scenes which have an hard hitting effect on you. The climax, scenes just before the interval are amazing. The actors take the movie to another level. The movie would have been much better had there been more confrontations between Ajay and Manoj bajpai. This is a brave attempt by the director to wake the people of our country and take the charge.  The movie wont disappoint you.
I am going with 3.5 on 5 for Prakash Jha's Satyagraha. A brave effort.

Understanding Bollywood.....

There is a lot of confusion going around among the movie lovers that why is there so much difference between the producers number's and the distributors numbers? What role does screen count play in collection of movie? What do you mean by Distributors share? How do producers recover the amounts invested by them? . All these are common questions in the minds of genuine movie lovers since past few weeks. I over here will try to answer all your questions.

Let us all start from few basic terms-
1- Producer
A producer is a person who takes the risk of making the movie. He is someone who would put his own money in the product . The main aim of a producer is to make profit.

2-Distributor
A distributor is a person who purchases rights to show the movie in a particular territory at a particular price. A distributor purchases the rights to show the movie in his territory from the producer.

3-Exhibitor
A exhibitor is basically the theater owner. There are 2 types of theater in India- Single screens and Multiplex. The exhibitor is being paid by distributor to run his movie in the theater. (We shall explain the entire process further)

4- Gross Collection
Gross collection is total collection of movie without deducting the TAX.

5-Net Collection
Net collection is total collection of movie after deducting the TAX.

These are the 3 basic terms used in bollywood whose meaning isn't known to many. The cycle of forecasting a movie is very complicated. Here I shall try to explain you that.  A producer shall invite all distributors to purchase the movie. The distributors bid for the movie and the one who has the maximum bid gets the movie.
Eg- Theres a leading distributor of Mumbai Territory. So if he wants to purchase a particular movie he shall pay producer a certain amount and buy that movie and only he would have the right to show that movie in that territory.
The distributor after purchasing the movie shall begin to book theaters to play the movie. While booking theaters there are various terms and conditions which are to be worked on. A single screen theater usually get a fixed amount of rent for playing the movie for X number of days and along with the rent it takes service charge. Barring this the entire amount goes to the distributor. There is vast amount of profit for distributors from single screens and they get a lot of return. In a multiplex distributors share is always diminishing. The distributor share is high in the 1st week but it goes on decreasing in the upcoming weeks.
Eg- In 1st week the amount distributor shall get would be 50% of total NET collection. While 2nd week may be reduced to 30% of total NET collection while the rest would be kept by the multiplex owners.

So distributor share is the amount the distributor receives from the theaters. It is the distributor share which matters the most as the distributor purchases the right of the movie from producers and it is important for them to recover the amount. In Bollywood movies are judged by total NET collections but barring Bollywood , all other movie industries judge the success of the movie taking into consideration distributors share. Even Tollywood and Punjabi movies are being judged on Distributors share.
In bollywood the movie having highest distributor share is EK THA TIGER with 113cr followed by 3 Idiots with 99cr. Despite Ek Tha Tiger earning less than 3 Idiots , It has a better distributor share mainly because of terms of distributors.
Once the movie is sold to the distributor the work of producers is more or less over except for reporting the figures.

This was the part one of my Exclusive article on explaining basics of bollywood. I shall be having more parts of the same coming soon which shall clear all your doubts. Hope you all liked this article. You can ask your queries in the comment section below. Hope you liked the article and my effort to make you understand the terms.

Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Doobara Movie Review

Movie-Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Doobara
Show- 10 am
Capacity- 100% (Housefull)

Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Doobara released today with a lot of excitement around the movie. Will the movie stand up to the expectations or will it will be dud. Here is my review of Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Doobara.

Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Doobara starts from the place where Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Ended. The movie starts of with a Bang. Akshay Kumar’s entry is amazing. The start of the movie is superb. The movie as the trailer suggests is basically a love triangle between Shoiab(Akshay Kumar), Jasmine ( Sonakshi Sinha) and Aslam (Imran Khan) which has been executed nicely. Dialogues by Rajat Arora are USP of the movie and they are powerful. He comes up with many powerful dialogues in the 1st half as well 2nd half which are worth our claps. Dialogues keep on coming at regular interval and they keep you glued to the movie.

The story of the movie is predictable except the climax. The climax shall shock you. The screenplay is good but could have been better. The movie could have been better edited. There are many scenes which are being executed amazingly. The scene before interval scene, The start of the movie and the climax is MINDBLOWING. The movie slows down a bit in the 2nd half but catches the pace quickly.

Acting department is a big surprise. Akshay kumar as Sohaib is amazing. He has that attitude and style but if you compare him with Ajay Devgn he will fall way short of Ajay Devgn. But still Akshay manages to play his role well. Sonakshi Sinha is good as Jasmine. She has a decent role and she is very good in the climax and emotional scenes. She is shown as a very innocent girl and she plays her part well. But the surprise package is Imran Khan. Everyone thought that he would not be able to play Aslam but he is pretty good. Though not the best but way above expectations.

Direction is good and the director manages to keep audience glued. The movie could have been around 15 mins shorter. The dialogues of the movie are amazing and they deserve a special mention. The dialogues make the ordinary story looks very good. Rajat Arora has compensated the ordinary script by his powerful dialogues.

The songs are well placed. Yeh Tune Kya Kia is very pleasing to the ears so is Chugliya.
Overall Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai doobara is a very good watch this holiday season. Though not better then the prequel yet it has its moments. Akshay kumar , Sonakshi and Imran shall keep you entertained. The background music will keep you involved in the movie.

I would rate this movie 3.25 on 5. A good movie to watch this holiday Season. Go and enjoy the movie.

Chennai Express has a Humongous weekend

Chennai Express has surpassed every ones expectations as far as Weekend collections are concerned. The movie has collected a MIND BLOWING  83.5 cr weekend ie Thursday+ Friday + Saturday and if we add the paid previews to this which was 6.5cr the total comes up to 90 cr in 3.5 days. This is surely humongous. The weekend break down of Chennai Express is given below-

Thursday- 6.5cr
Friday-29.5cr
Saturday-25.5cr
Sunday-28.5cr

Total- 90cr

Chennai Express has broken the opening weekend record of past best Dabangg 2 which was 65cr. Chennai Express is sure to cross 100cr mark by today evening. Chennai Express now has 2 records under its name now- Highest paid preview (Previous best was 3 Idiots with 2.25cr) and Highest Weekend. Chennai Express failed to break Opening Day of Ek Tha Tiger by just 1cr. Chennai Express is all set to reach quickest at the 100cr mark within 4 days (Previous best Ek Tha Tiger/Dabangg2- 5 Days)

One of the main reason for such an amazing performance of Chennai Express is the release period. I feel Chennai Express has got the best release date after Dabangg. Chennai Express had Friday as a National Holiday(Eid) , Saturday was celebrated as Basi Eid and Sunday. Basi Eid helped Chennai Express to sustain on Saturday without much fall. The same was the case with Dabangg. Ek Tha Tiger on other hand had a full working 2nd day ie thursday so it had a huge fall after a 33cr Day1.

One section of industry are following numbers given by UTV ie Producers number. According to UTV Chennai Express has a 100cr weekend. UTV gave out Chennai Express figures as follows-

Thursday- 7cr
Friday- 33.12cr
Saturday- 28.5
Sunday- 32.5cr

Total- 100.5cr approx

But the main test of Chennai Express starts from today. If the fall on Monday isnt more then we can surely expect Chennai Express running like a Bullet Train. But if the fall is more then Chennai Express shall End up below the 200cr Mark.

To be precised If Chennai Express earns above 12cr then this would be a good sign for the movie and if it is below 12 then we can expect it to crash in the upcoming day.

I shall soon write an article on the reason of Difference between Producers Numbers and Distributors Numbers and how are they being calculated. Either i would write it myself or ask one of my friend who knows more about it to explain you all. Will surely try to make you all understand difference between producers numbers and distributors number.

Till then keep reading my blog and ask your friends to read it too..
